Reading this particular adventure was kind of like watching a movie that is shot all in one place, but it’s never boring. Someone is sabotaging them from the inside of the castle, lots of in-fighting because zzombie past personal histories — even the slayers are having issues amongst themselves Usually I can predict where a story is going, but Snd kept me guessing the whole way through.
After Shamanslayer, I knew what the next fepix would be, but this time, I have no idea how Nathan Long plans to continue the series. I aand if my review is vague, but it’s very difficult to discuss this particular story without giving away any of the many spoilers contained within.
I would recommend buying this if you like the Warhammer fantasy world. I really expected a lot more out of this Gotrek and Felix outing. I didn’t care much for the all over the place plot to shamanslayer and zombieslayer really didn’t pick up my opinion of Nathan Long’s run on the series.
I mean, are Gotrek and Felix really that dumb that they didn’t know something was wrong with Hans the Hermit? And what about Kemmler himself, anyway? He was a joke compared to some of the foes they’ve faced in the past, like the albino sorcerer twin and they still couldn’t get the kill over him, or even his no personality underling Krell.
Krell himself seemed to be an opponent created just to occupy Gotek time from killing the necromancer Kemmler! At times Gotrek owned and at others they were stalemated. He was inconsistently portrayed in order to provide an obstacle to Gotrek, not advance the storyline, which was hurting itself. I mean, if people and leaders in the Empire are that dumb, it should have fallen to Chaos long ago.
There slwyer some social commentary on the decadence of the nobility and the blind, dumb loyalty that such a aristocratic system of control brings, but it was a fairly minor point in the plot.
The Felix and Kat relationship is not impressing me? Doesn’t Felix know Kat was marked by dark powers from her birth and it isn’t going to end well, just like all his other so-called relationships? And the whole no one knowing who Gotrek and Felix are is getting old. I could understand in other lands people not knowing who they are, but in the Reikland their reputation should be getting around considering how many threats they’ve killed and in light of the books Felix has published.
Every other slager treating them like gottek name chumps is just irritating? Who does have Gotrek have to kill to gain the rep he should have? I thought Elfslayer was a real velix up for the series despite its flaws, but these last two books have fallen kind of flat. I mean when William King wrote the books, yes they could be depressing at times, especially when he killed off characters that were growing on you, but there was also a lot of humor even amidst the darkness.
Vampireslayer was a downer of a book, but zombieslayer was so depressing I wondered why any one was even fighting the bad guys. If slsyer Empire’s leadership is that incompetent, they’re not going to survive another invasion any way.
Even Felix, who should know better by now, seems only slightly smarter than the clueless supporting cast around him? The whole not recognizing Kemmler as a bad guy was unforgivable, but the story suffers from many things that make no sense. One of the most important castles in the Empire, Reikguard, has not one sorcerers posting to defend it? gotrfk
Felix not knowing of how the Axe of Grimnir is a source of Gotrek’s strength? There were just too many things that irritated me about this book to enjoy it.
Zombieslayer (Warhammer : Gotrek and Felix) by Nathan Long
The series hasn’t had a really great book since Giantslayer. It may never have one again. Zombieslayer continues the storyline of Shamanslayer. Hans the Hermit, revealed to be Heinrich Kimmler, having tricked the Empire and the beastmen into slaughtering each other, raises both armies from the dead and forges it into a force to invade the Empire.
Retreating to nearby fortifications, the beleagured Felix and the Slayer Gotrek find a bare bones defense force, not the well garrisoned and supplied army they hoped for, turning the citadel into a Alamo against the undead.
Nathan Long continues to run the relationship between Gotrek and Felix well. Felix continues to pull well more than his own weight, but Long manages to portray Gotrek almost as an alien, rather than a short fat guy who’s really, really strong and likes beer.
Also well handled are the Empire peasantry and noble forces. Overall, Zombieslayer continues to carry the plot line along. Some of the sidebars have started to stretch to far, but others have been well paired down. While none of these books have come close to resembling a “happy” ending, they continue to be good stories with decent write ups and twists that manage to surprise, as it’ll be exactly what you think it is, but not quite.
And there are things Long has done with the characters that I legitimately enjoy. And I won’t lie, slaying zombies after slaying a Bloodthirster in Demon Slayer is just anticlimactic. They are running out of new and interesting things to slay. The ending of this particular novel is just anticlimactic as well, even without being taken into the greater context of the series. And Snorri and Max and Kat and a few other really great characters. I grew to really enjoy the disposable extras in this novel especially.
Even if they had only 30 or 40 pages of presence before becoming zombified, they had some great lines and interactions while they were around. And Felix is given plenty of room to shine as well, which is great to see. For a while he’d become purely a narrator, contributing almost nothing to advance the story. If you are a fan, it certainly can’t hurt to read this one. If you’ve stuck around this long and enjoyed it, this is more of the same.
